May 2008 – The Work Continues
Even though the last traces of the old terminal are gone, the work is still not finished. In fact, now that the demolition is done, our contractor for the terminal will soon start construction of the foundations for the loading bridges that will be installed on the west side of the new wing. Once the foundations are finished, they will look after building the fixed loading bridges. This construction should be finished at or about the beginning of September.
At the same time, our civil engineering contractor will finish the hook-ups to the water main before tackling construction of the apron. To build the apron, the aggregates that will support the travelled surfaces will have to be well compacted. The thickness and size of the aggregates are based on the loads that the pavement will be required to bear. The greater the loads, the thicker the aggregate layer will need to be. Where the airplanes travel, asphalt is generally acceptable, whereas concrete must be used where the airplanes park.
Finally, the five new loading bridges should arrive around August 27th. Since approximately two weeks is required for each installation, the work should be finished before the end of November. Obviously, all these dates are somewhat temperature-dependent.
After nearly two years of work, the end is in sight, but one final push is still needed.
