Airport Expansion Phase II

Updates

March 2007 – Spring is in the Air

With the arrival of milder weather, the activities at the construction site have taken on a new pace. Even though we did not have much snow this winter, the weather kept the construction workers at home several times due to the intense cold. If the temperature remains steady, the pouring and foundation work should be completed before Easter. The end of this work will leave the area open for the steel structure to be erected, followed by the curtain wall. In the meantime, crews are installing the ventilation ducts and the electrical system at the south part of the site.

In early March, we awarded a contract for nearly $10 million to R.W. Tomlinson Limited for the civil engineering work. There are three components to this work:

  1. First, modifications will be made to the platform at gates 18, 19 and 20 as we know them today. This work will allow a gentle transition between the new gates on the west side of the new construction and the current gates;
  2. Then, they will continue building the platform on the east side of the new construction, near the P4 parking lot. This work should be completed in time for the installation of three new bridges that will serve the three gates in the expanded space – 23, 25 and 27; and
  3. Finally, in 2008, Tomlinson will return to build new underground water, sewer and rainwater conduits near the west wall of the construction and then complete the paving work once the old terminal has been demolished. We believe that we will be able to install the last of the new loading bridges on the west side of the new construction in the fall of 2008.

Even though we lost several days of construction because of the cold, we believe that we will be able to make up the lost time in the coming months. The opening of the new wing is still scheduled for 2007.
