June 2006 – Expansion Program Phase II Update
Last month, as planned, we went ahead with the construction of the new employee parking lots. This project, estimated at $1 million, was a success. In addition to that project, we moved the taxis and their building from their former location to the site previously occupied by Budget Car Rental. This move allowed us to relocate employees to these new parking lots. In the next few days, the contractor will go to work on the old parking lot left vacant by the employee relocation: the pavement will be scarified, the water and sewer pipes will be moved, new communication conduits will be built and the low block wall will be moved. Once all this work is finished, the excavation for the new wing can begin.
By the time you read this, we will have put out a call for tenders for the demolition of the east section of the old terminal. The demolition work should begin in early August and take approximately five months. At the same time, we will put out a call for tenders for the construction of the new wing of the terminal. The contractor will be selected in late July and start the work in early August as well. This contract is estimated at nearly $40 million. So the next few months are going to be particularly busy.
Over the past few weeks, a number of Administration employees were very busy rereading the plans and estimates as well as the tender documents to provide their feedback to the planning team. Some of them used their past experience to work with the architects and engineers so that we end up with documents, and ultimately a building, that truly meet our needs in terms of easy maintenance, easy access and passenger experience.
