Airport Expansion Phase II

Updates

August 2006 – Expansion Program Phase II Update

As you can all see, the preliminary work on the south side of the airport is going well. The purpose of this work is to prepare the site for the construction of the new wing of the terminal and the adjacent aprons. In conjunction with this, the contractor has relocated communications, water supply and sewer conduits, and arranged for the old terminal’s power to be supplied from the new one.

In early August, we retained the Panzini company from Montreal to demolish the eastern portion of the old terminal. In the coming weeks, they will be removing asbestos and other designated substances, and they expect to complete the demolition early in the new year. With regard to the western portion, now used as waiting areas, demolition will have to await completion of the new construction.

We have also retained Pomerleau as the general contractor responsible for construction of the airport expansion. Pomerleau’s contract is worth very nearly $50 million. In the days ahead, they will be setting up their job-site trailers in what was the E2 parking lot, and then excavation for the foundation of the expansion will begin. To assist in erecting the forms for the poured foundation and walls, a construction crane will be set up early in September. At the same time, piles will be driven to support the foundations in some areas where the subsoil is soft clay. By mid-fall, we should have an honest-to-goodness construction site right in our backyard. The current schedule indicates that we shall be able to move into the new waiting areas early in 2008.
