Airport Expansion Phase II

April 2007 – The Work is Progressing

The construction is going smoothly at the site. Now that the nice weather is here, some of the time lost during the winter cold has been made up. Just before Easter, they poured the floor for the second floor. With the major concrete work completed, the boom crane can be assembled. If any further concrete needs to be poured, they will use mobile cranes.

As the concrete dries, they will erect the steel structure. For this, since they have to link the steel for the new structure to the existing terminal, they will have to remove the wall of the terminal at gate 18. To do so, they will build another wall inside the terminal along the south face of gate 18. Once this new wall is built, the outside wall can be demolished and work can progress on the steel structure.

Some of you may be wondering about the concrete shell built near the existing terminal. It is for three elevator shafts. One elevator will go from the holdroom level to level 3 for the Maple Leaf Lounge; another will be a freight elevator that goes between the basement and level 2; and the third will operate between the basement and level 3.

In a few days, they will start installing the curtain wall on the south face of the new construction. By the time you read this, they will probably have already poured the concrete floor for the entire ground floor, which will allow the ventilation equipment and electrical systems to be installed.

Finally, as we wrote in the previous issue, Tomlinson should get started within the next few days on the civil engineering work that will lead to the paving of the airplane marshalling and parking areas.
