What's New at the Airport?

Classic Vintage Aircraft Showcased at the Ottawa International Airport

A rare and unique vintage aircraft recently featured in a Hollywood blockbuster movie will be on display at the Ottawa International Airport arrivals area beginning 28 July, and will remain on location until mid September.

A Taperwing WACO (for Weaver Aircraft Company), owned and operated by Vintage Wings of Canada, is one of the true classics of the golden age of biplane flying, air-racing and barnstorming leading up to the Second World War.

The Vintage Wings’ WACO was recently featured in the 2009 Hollywood movie ‘Amelia’ staring Hilary Swank. There are currently only two fully operational WACO’s left in the world, one of which belongs to Vintage Wings.

The Ottawa International Airport Authority has partnered with Vintage Wings to raise awareness about the public charitable organization located right here in the national capital region and to promote the upcoming 18 Sept. Air Show at the Executive Gatineau Airport in Gatineau, QC.

Now in its fifth season of hosting Open Houses, Vintage Wings will be the site for the very first Canadian Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) convention and fly-in. The EAA is the world’s largest recreational organization and are most notable for the largest fly-in event in North America, AirVenture Oshkosh. Over 200 recreation aircraft are anticipated to visit Vintage Wings over the course of the three-day event from 17 -19 Sept. The Ottawa International Airport will play host to many guests expected to participate in the EAA convention arriving from destinations across Canada and the United States.

Vintage Wings of Canada: Commemorate, Educate, Inspire

"At Vintage Wings of Canada, it is our mission to celebrate Canada’s aviation heritage and inspire Canadians with powerful stories of the heroes, aircraft and events that make up this great legacy.

To do this we acquire, restore and display the finest airworthy examples of important aircraft in Canadian aviation history.

Vintage Wings of Canada is a registered charity supported by volunteers and funded through financial donations in cash or in-kind support of benefactors. Though the organization is thought of as a Canadian institution, it is not supported by government grants and direct public funding.

Financial donations enable Vintage Wings of Canada to maintain a state-of-the-art restoration centre and hangar, to display these historic aircraft, and to reach out to the Canadian public with a variety of educational programs."
